Papa San…where in the world have I been all these years. I have been sleeping on gospel Reggae apparently. Well guess what, I am not sleeping anymore. Now if you are unfamiliar like me, Papa San is no amateur to gospel reggae. He has been making hits since the earlier 90’s and is in fact known for being Jamaica’s fastest lyrical DJ. If that doesn’t impress you, the fact that he has been nominated for Dove, Stellar, Marlin, and World Music Awards should. Well Papa San is back with his latest album One Blood.
So many things stood out to me in this album. The first things that stood out to me and probably will to you are the features. One Blood features artist such as Da T.R.U.T.H, Lecrae, Israel Houghton, and Fred Hammond. Having an album full of features can actually be hard to pull off because I have seen in other artist albums that it loses the voice of the artist. With One Blood it actually worked in its favor and even added to it. It meshed so many different genres, such as CHH and Gospel, while still keeping the reggae sound. The production is another thing that stood out to me from One Blood. Tyshane did an amazing job. Each track was very energetic, ambient, and just full of amazing beats. The dancehall rhythms make you want to get up and Pon De River. The last thing that I noticed was the title of the album. One Blood is a phrase that is often quoted in the Jamaican community. The phrase basically means that despite the fact that there are many differences among people, bloods are united among one. Papa San brought this same message into his album that we are all connected by the blood of Jesus Christ once we accept him as our savior. There should be unity that we should display with Christ that breaks our differences and brings us together as one for the sake of Jesus Christ. I think this very concept is the reason Papa San filled his album with features to display One Blood.
It would be extremely hard for me to choose my favorite song from One Blood so I will list some of my favorites. I enjoyed Step Up, One Blood, Your Eyes Are On Me, God By My Side, and Revival. I felt like these were some true heavy hitters and brought out that true dancehall feel. All in All One Blood is a CLASSIC regardless if you’re a fan of reggae or not. There is so much good stuff packed in this 13 track cd that you don’t want to miss out on. So if you love to dance and worship, this is definitely the album for you.
