A Few Tips for Music Creatives

Being a creative today can be a wonderful thing. Disintermediation, independence, and autonomy creates opportunities. However, it also creates the need for more ownership and understanding of the process, end-to-end.

This is by no means an exhaustive end-to-end guide, but will hopefully help with some of the most pertinent items to help you increase your effectiveness in music ministry.

Ensure You AND Your Music are registered in the right places

Professional Rights Organizations

  • BMI – BMI is the bridge between songwriters and the businesses and organizations that want to play their music publicly. As a global leader in music rights management, BMI serves as an advocate for the value of music, representing over 18.7 million musical works created and owned by more than 1.2 million songwriters, composers, and music publishers.
  • ASCAP ASCAP is a membership association of more than 875,000 songwriters, composers, and music publishers.
  • SESAC – SESAC currently licenses the public performances of more than 1 million songs on behalf of its 30,000 affiliated songwriters, composers and music publishers

Organizations That Track Your Music

  • SoundExchange –   SoundExchange solutions make it easier for creators and their representatives to manage the business side of music. SoundExchange Direct is a free service available to all creators via the website or app. After registering, creators can search and claim their recordings, track their catalog, and review their digital royalty payments.
  • BDS – BDS aggregates airplay. By submitting your music for encoding you ensure that all airplay is accurately tracked and reported before it feeds into Billboard's industry-standard charts that are used by major record labels, radio groups, and performing rights organizations in the US and Canada.
  • Mediabase: Mediabase is a music industry service that monitors radio station airplay in 180 US and Canadian markets. Mediabase publishes music charts and data based on the most played songs on terrestrial and satellite radio, and provides in-depth analytical tools for radio and record industry professionals. Send your new music here –

Ensure each of your songs has an ISRC code.

Each ISRC is a unique and permanent identifier for a specific recording, independent of the format on which it appears (CD, audio file, etc.) or the rights holders involved.
