There is no event more highly anticipated than the Grammys. These awards show features astounding performances, emotional acceptance speeches, as well as star-studded entrances. The 2023 Grammys was no exception to this. However, there is an entirely different topic that has people talking about that event. The topic of Christian Living.

The Gospel community has been divided on this topic. What sparked this debate were some of the controversial performances during the show. Many within the Gospel community wonder, how can this show be condoned. Wouldn’t this be something harmful to the Christian way of life?

What exactly happened during the Grammys?

The Grammys aired on February 5, 2023, and were hosted by Trevor Noah. It was a star-studded event filled with amazing performances. One performance that stood out was a tribute to hip hop featuring Busta Rhymes as well as other talented artists from that genre. The performance that had people talking was the song ‘Unholy,’ performed by Sam Smith and Kim Petras. Their performance, as well as Kim’s acceptance speech, caused controversy.

What controversy? This led many Christians to question whether or not they should take part in events like this. Are these spectacles in opposition to the Christian way of life? Those are very important questions for any person to ask. They also led to division in the Gospel community as many struggle to find the answer.

Opposing Viewpoints
On Instagram, rapper Da’ T.R.U.T.H shared footage of the hip-hop performance and a message about the controversy.

Later, he posted an additional Instagram video in which he shared his supporting viewpoint.

He urged us to be ‘known for more than what we hate.’ A very powerful saying. He did stress that it is to dislike the things that God dislikes. His viewpoint is that this shouldn’t be our defining quality. We’re not meant to be hateful people.

Many agree with Da’ T.R.U.T.H and support him. They echo his Words saying we don’t display the brotherly love that the bible commands when we show anger or condemnation to someone else.

Another supportive viewpoint is that God knows what’s happening. He sees the wickedness taking place already. He doesn’t need our anger or criticism adding to it.

Those in opposition feel that to be a true Christian is to hate everything that is in opposition to God. Others feel that these shows are not important. That they are material things not of this world. One final viewpoint stresses that many don’t understand God’s word. This goes as far as saying that by allowing ourselves to be part of these events, we are becoming a part of the world, and that is something God urged us not to do.

In Conclusion

Both sides make very compelling cases. They present many deep and different viewpoints that are clear to understand and make you consider spiritual matters on a different level.

As Christians, though, we have a duty to identify ourselves first and foremost as followers of Christ. It’s in the name. We must uphold that spiritual way of life. We must demonstrate to the world that we’re living our lives as a witness to God. That is what being Christian is all about.
