“My love for God and passion for music allows me to do something I love while being able to spread the gospel. That’s what really motivates me to keep going!”
Christian Hip Hop artist Tyler Jackson has always loved creating and performing music and he found inspiration within the art.
“I always kept my biblical morals for the most part even when I was doing secular music,” the rapper stated. “I used to tell other people to keep their lyrics clean and I tried to keep everything positive.”
He continued, “It was when I started to go left that I decided to stop music completely. I actually stopped making music twice in my career; both times were due to seemingly straying away from my Biblical values.”
Tyler explained he didn’t originally think of himself as a CHH artist.
“When I was younger, I didn’t know what to talk or write about because I felt I didn’t have much of a testimony,” he recalled. “I knew people were more judgmental and at the time I couldn’t handle personal criticism well.”
In the following years, the artist experienced trials and pain.
“Over time life happened; I experienced alcoholism, depression, and my father passed away in 2019,” he shared.
Tyler said these experiences became a pivotal part of his testimony.
“After my dad passed away, I leaned on God even heavier to get through those tough times,” he explained.
By the end of 2023, Tyler had connected with multiple CHH artists from Temple and Austin, Texas.
“Being surrounded by other brothers and sisters in the faith really motivated me to make music for God,” he said.
Tyler’s ministry, ‘Stay Focused,’ is based on Colossians 3:2: ‘Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on Earth.’
“This particular verse resonates with me because sometimes we get distracted or overwhelmed by things going on around us and we forget that the kingdom is what we’re truly to be focused on,” Tyler stated.
The artist, who is also a husband and father of three, is an avid reader and student of the Bible.
“My favorite complete book of the Bible would have to be the book of John. Reading the Gospels is definitely where I would tell a new reader or believer to start.”
