“Forward,” is a sobering song of accepting reality, and a harsh reality at that. E.i. spent almost half his life incarcerated, and this song is his reflection of his experience in prison. Looking back remembers the pain, suicidal thoughts, and feeling abandoned, and left to deal with it all alone, yet he recounts the beauty as well, the purpose that was found, even in the midst of hopelessness.

E.i.’s melodic cadence and rap sing describe the emotions of feeling distant from God, wasting his life in prison, yet coming to terms with it all and moving forward in life. The recorded prison phone call from E.i. at the end of the song leaves the listener with chills, hearing E.i.’s weariness and his longing to just come home and be free.
