Darlene McCoy’s divine revelation of hell

Mother, National Recording Artist, Radio Personality, Actress, Author, Songwriter, Mentor, Entrepreneur, Comedian, and Speaker; Darlene McCoy joins Da Fixx to discuss faith, rejection, and her personal divine revelation of hell. 

Darlene didn’t always have the faith she has today.  As a teen, she struggled with animosity against God when her beloved grandmother passed away.  The thought that her grandmother may not have gone to heaven caused her to be angry with God. 

“What we were being taught in the church at that time was that if you sin then you’re going to hell.  Period.  I heard her say a cuss word because somebody made her mad.  But she was still such an amazing woman.  We hear these fire and brimstone messages…so I stayed in my head with it,” Darlene explains.    

Reluctant to talk to someone about her internal struggle, anger quickly took root.  “If he’s that the kind of God if he’s that mean then I don’t want to see him anyway.  I don’t want nothing to do with him.  I don’t want no parts of him,” the radio personality reveals. 

That changed when her brother went into the Air Force when she was 16.  She’d call his phone back in the day, his outgoing message was a song by Commissioned. She would eventually buy the tape and it ministered to her in a way the pulpit didn’t.  “I fell in love with Commissioned and my heart started to open for worship.  And then I started feeling like I could be honest.  I can be real with this God,” she gushes, relieved to be developing her own relationship with God.

With the evolution of gospel music and the emergence of Christian Hip Hop, we have seen the church undergo a transformation.  It is no longer about religion, it’s about a personal relationship with God, with Jesus.  “You are supposed to share your authenticity and let God shine himself.  He [God] said, if I am lifted up, I will draw all men unto me.  We don’t allow God to draw through our lifting.  We’re not humble enough.” Says the author actress.

Being authentic in the entertainment industry can be challenging, especially in the gospel arena.  Historically Christian Hip Hop artists are shunned by the church.  “Here’s how the Lord showed it to me.  I was booked to go on a tour with a few artists.  There was a church that knew my name on the radio.  When they got the flyer, my hair was fire red, and I had lines all over the side of my head.  And they were like whoa!  She can’t come to my church!”  The promoter removed her from the tour. 

Despite being taken off guard, the singer-songwriter quickly made peace with it, “I was like cool.  I don’t want to go there anyway because what I have ain’t for them.  Apparently, it’s for my audience and they’re not my audience.  I gotta be cool with that because I’m not called to everybody.  I will gladly take your rejection because it’s protection for me and my ministry,” Darlene says. 

“When I came out with my music it was being played on R and B radio stations because gospel said it was too R and B sounding to be gospel.  I was going up the billboard on R and B [charts] with a gospel record.  But radio formats were shutting me down left and right.  I came and did a concert for an R and B station in Atlanta Georgia and the program director for the R and B [station] and the gospel [station] was the same person.  He came to me and said I would like you to consider coming into radio in the gospel radio format,” reveals Darlene. 

As we know, she not only accepted the position, she has made radio history. The Bible says all things work for the good of those who love the Lord.  That’s one of the benefits of developing a personal relationship with God.  You begin to understand how he works in your life.  “I feel like God used me to usher in another idea for what Gospel is supposed to be.  I’m not going to change who I am to fit a small narrative of people who don’t understand what God is doing.  I’m going to follow what God has called me to do and I’m going to be faithful,” exclaims Darlene.

New level new devil!

Does it seem like every time we began to elevate all hell breaks loose?  Why does that happen?  More importantly, how do we handle these types of situations? 

First of all, you must identify your weakness.  “You need to know your areas of weakness because that’s where the enemy is going to attack you.  Every single level is going to have a different devil,” explains Dice.  The Bible says not to be ignorant of Satan’s devices.   When you know the areas, you struggle with, you will be able to recognize manipulation and be prepared to resist temptation. 

“Where much is given, much is required,” says Focus who admits he’s blessed with the gift of longsuffering. “Understand when you elevate there’s going to be new issues that are going to arise.  We should expect these things to happen.”

“I’ve changed my habits. I have bible prayer and meditation at 7 am every day just to remind me that the test is going to come today.  So, when I run up on it, I’m not stuck or offended,” says Dice.  “We have to have a test.  That’s how we know we’re at the next level.” Bit by bit.

As we face these tests, this devil on the next level, find comfort and guidance in the scriptures. Therefore, we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.  For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.  So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18.
