Unveiling the Pain: Point Ash’s Raw Reality of Inner-City Struggles.
Published on June 28, 2023
On this week’s Church on the Block, we welcomed the talented artist Point Ash, who shared his powerful music and thought-provoking insights. This is an incredible episode that left us feeling inspired and enlightened.
The Power of Art: A Journey into Inner City Realities
Point Ash, aka Ash Harris Jr., hailing from Gary, Indiana, poured his heart out about his love for hip hop and the struggles he faces as a gospel-centered artist in a competitive industry. His song “Land of Make Believe” is a raw portrayal of the pain and hardships experienced in the inner city. Point Ash passionately spoke about the importance of reaching out to those in the inner city, recognizing it as a mission field despite the challenges and outward sinfulness that may exist.
One aspect that struck me was Point Ash’s desire for Western Christianity thinkers to experience a different perspective of Christianity outside of the West. He eloquently discussed how the American evangelical bubble can narrow our understanding of living by biblical standards. This opened my eyes to the need for a more diverse and inclusive approach to our faith.
In their conversation, Point Ash shared a humbling experience he had with Pastah J. Jay advised him to only call himself a gospel rapper if he truly talked about the gospel in his music. This advice made Point Ash realize his arrogance and desire to dominate others in the music industry. It’s refreshing to see an artist willing to reflect on their actions and strive for growth.
The hosts, Pastor Phil and Pastah J, praised Point Ash’s depth and thoughtfulness in his lyrics. They discussed the power of having conversations and dialogue, rather than merely preaching and providing answers. This resonated with me as it reminded me of the importance of truly understanding different perspectives and engaging in meaningful discussions.
Point Ash on music and community
Another aspect that stood out was Point Ash’s emphasis on vulnerability and artistic expression. He stressed the need for artists to study cadence and musicianship, relying on their own skills rather than auto-tune. He also called for more mentorship and education within the hip-hop community, highlighting the importance of support and guidance for aspiring artists.
I was touched by Point Ash’s gratitude towards DJ Ruckus, who supported him during a difficult time in his life. Point Ash commended Ruckus for his integrity and genuine care. It’s heartwarming to witness the impact of a supportive friendship that goes beyond the microphone.
