MUC Presents: Swimming Against The Current
On this episode of The Man Up Club Presents, alternative host Celena Lena sat down with Tijon Lopez-Star, a standout participant in the organization’s Youth Build program. At just eighteen years old, Tijon offered wisdom and perspective beyond his years, sharing stories of resilience, personal growth, and his vision for the future. His words remind us that leadership and strength often grow out of adversity.
Finding Strength in the Midst of Challenges
Tijon’s upbringing was anything but easy. Moving through more than ten schools before fifth grade, he spent much of his childhood navigating instability, homelessness, and transitions that would have discouraged many. During this time, Tijon often had to take on responsibilities beyond his age, stepping into a leadership role in his household while his mother worked long hours.
Despite these challenges, he refused to be defined by them. Instead, Tijon leaned on self-discipline, books, and personal reflection to shape his outlook. “I used to read just to stay out of trouble,” he explained, highlighting how reading became a tool to expand his perspective and develop his character. Rather than letting his environment dictate his path, he chose to carve out a new one.
Influences and Independence
When asked about his influences, Tijon pointed to his cousin and, surprisingly, himself. While family played a role, much of his development came from internal motivation and lessons learned through observation. He explained that watching the mistakes of others taught him what paths to avoid. Instead of repeating cycles, he became determined to build something better.
He also shared candidly about his relationship with his mother, admitting they have had their challenges but expressing gratitude and love for her influence. His honesty reflected a maturity in understanding that parents, too, are human, and relationships take work.
Embracing Identity and Culture
A memorable moment of the conversation came when Tijon explained the story behind his unique last name—Lopez-Star. With Puerto Rican roots on his mother’s side and Native American and African American heritage from his father, his background is rich with cultural depth.
Learning about his heritage has been important for Tijon, who wants to visit Puerto Rico before he turns 20 to connect with family and roots. He also recently discovered benefits available to him through the Creek Nation tribe, including educational opportunities and potential access to land. These revelations highlight how identity, when embraced, can open doors to the future.
Dreams of Building and Giving Back
Tijon has his eyes set firmly on the future. He plans to leave Minnesota before the age of twenty, with Colorado as his likely destination. His vision isn’t just about relocating—it’s about building a life of independence. He aspires to purchase land, build his own home, and use the skills he’s gaining through the Youth Build program to create stability for himself and his family.
What motivates him most is his role as a big brother. The birth of his younger sibling inspired him to take saving money seriously and to pursue goals with intention. “I want him to always know he has someone who will be there for him,” Tijon shared, reflecting his commitment to being a positive role model.
Mind, Body, and Soul
In the final segment, the discussion turned to the balance of mind, body, and soul. Tijon revealed that he values silence and self-reflection, often engaging in conversations with himself to stay accountable and logical. He believes that taking time for quietness helps him filter out negativity and focus on positive outcomes. His perspective mirrors a timeless truth: peace begins within.
As Celena pointed out, his ability to find strength in stillness and remain grounded is rare, especially in a world of constant noise and distractions.
Closing Thoughts
At just eighteen, Tijon Lopez-Star embodies the resilience and determination that The Man Up Club seeks to instill in young men. His story is one of courage, intentionality, and hope—a reminder that our circumstances don’t have to define us. Instead, through discipline, reflection, and vision, we can chart a new course not only for ourselves but for those who come after us.
As Tijon put it best: “Think positive, and positive things will come.” His words challenge us all to embrace a mindset of resilience, because when one young man rises above adversity, entire communities are lifted with him.
