Devotional

If you ask most people what worry looks like, they’ll probably describe racing thoughts at 2 a.m., a knot in the stomach, or replaying the same “what if” over and over.

What we don’t usually call it is warfare. Yet that’s exactly what Paul describes in 2 Corinthians 10:5:

“Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”

An imagination left unchecked doesn’t stay small. It moves in, digs in, and starts writing the ending to a story that hasn’t happened yet, almost always the worst version.

Eventually, it starts to feel like fact, and we begin making real decisions based on something that was never true.

Last year, my family was planning a vacation. I’m the only one working in my household, and between the trip and my son’s high school graduation that same year, money was going to be tight.

We’re a family of six, which usually means two vehicles just to move together. Both of ours were older and needed work.

It was January, and the trip wasn’t until November. I told my wife I was believing God for an SUV so our whole family could ride together and that financially, we wouldn’t have to worry about a thing.

I stood on Matthew 6:26, which reminds us that if God feeds the birds of the air, how much more will He care for us?

Three months before the trip, we still didn’t have the SUV. As more expenses came throughout the year, the trip wasn’t fully paid for, and money was low.

That’s when doubt showed up, whispering that maybe we should tell everyone we couldn’t afford it. Maybe we should just send the kids without us.

But the Holy Spirit brought that verse back to mind, and I had a choice to make.

I took the thought captive and stood on God’s Word instead of what I saw in my bank account.

Then, two and a half weeks before the trip, with no SUV and no extra money, my wife hit a deer with our better car, and it was totaled.

Our other car had started running hot and couldn’t go fifteen minutes without overheating, let alone make a six-hour drive.

Two cars down. No money to fix either one.

That’s the moment that reveals what you actually believe.

In the past, news like that would have opened the door for doubt and discouragement to take over my mind. But in my spirit, I knew what this really was: a spiritual attack aimed straight at what I was believing God for.

So I made the same choice again, standing on Psalm 27:13, believing that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.

A week before the trip, we had a new SUV.

On the first day of vacation, the insurance payout for the totaled car came through, and we didn’t have to worry about anything the whole trip.

God used that season to grow my faith and teach me what it actually looks like to bring a thought into captivity instead of letting it run wild.

Whether the battle you’re facing is financial, medical, relational, or something you can’t even name yet, the pattern is the same.

The enemy attacks with a “what if” dressed up as realism.

And the way we stand firm is by knowing God’s Word well enough to recognize the lie and answer it with His truth.

Practical Application

This week, when you notice a worst-case thought forming, stop and name it out loud.

Ask yourself whether that thought aligns with what God has said.

Choose one specific Scripture that speaks to what you’re currently facing. Write it down and place it somewhere you’ll see it daily.

When doubt returns, speak that Scripture over your situation and remind yourself of God’s truth.

Reflection Questions

  • What situation in your life right now is requiring you to bring your thoughts into captivity through the Word of God?
  • What specific Scripture can you hold on to when negative or worst-case thoughts begin to take over?

Prayer

Father God, we come before You humbly, thanking You for Your amazing mercy and grace.

Help us bring our thoughts into captivity and recognize when fear, worry, and doubt are taking our focus away from Your truth.

Show us through Your Word how to replace negative thoughts with Your promises.

Give us the courage and strength to stand firm when the enemy tries to overwhelm us with discouragement.

Teach us to trust You even when our circumstances don’t reflect what we’re believing You for.

Strengthen our faith, renew our minds, and help us remain confident in Your goodness.

In Jesus’ name, amen.
