Embracing the creative process with NobodyGHY

When we are pursuing our God-given purpose, the journey can be downright tedious.  Moments of frustration can lead to despair and even prompt us to give up.  How do we persevere? Better still, how do we embrace the process?

Seeking guidance from God is always first.  Making sure we are locked in with God on his purpose for our lives.  “I prayed about it. I was like, I still need to get my education. I gotta get my degree in something as my parents always said. So, I chose music, production, and composition, and it just kind of took off from there. After that, I really wanted to focus on Christ because he led me to, you know, where I am right now.” Virginia native and preacher’s kid NobodyGHY tells da squad.

Despite not having a huge following, he remains grateful for being able to use his musical gift and the opportunity to perform at an event during last year’s Stellar Awards weekend, “…he [God] gave me a purpose in my heart to make music for him.  And it’s by the grace of God that I am where I am right now.”

The self-proclaimed girl dad says fatherhood has softened his heart, “I think I’m more open to receive grace and mercy and give out grace and mercy.”  And even though he and his daughter’s mother are separated, NobodyGHY is adamant about healthy co-parenting, “I knew, as a black male, I needed to be in her life.  And that’s really important, especially in our culture…as someone who’s in the hip hop culture, being in her life was, of extreme importance, especially as a woman.  Teaching her how to love and, how a man should love, or what a man should do especially in this day and age is extremely important.”

Another important part of the process is healing.  Healing enables us to make peace with the past and be fully present in the now.  It allows us to grow in our effectiveness; in work and in life.  “Cause that that hurt.  Dealing with that is a beast in and of itself. I went to counseling. And that really opened my eyes.  It was a real process by fire.  Because one, I didn’t wanna hurt anybody else.  And I didn’t wanna be hurt.  God helped me through it.”

As we are on this journey of purpose there will be times when we can feel stuck.  Unsure of what to do next or even unable to create.  “Honestly, something that is a huge thing that I’ve been dealing with is writer’s block.  I really don’t like to throw that word around a lot because I don’t necessarily believe in writer’s block a ton.  When I do have those spots of not hearing Christ, cause that’s what I think it is,” says NobodyGHY.

What do we do when we find ourselves in that space? Seek God.  “I don’t need to be doing music right now, obviously, I need to be in my word.  It redirects me into something, even learning something new or relearning something that I already know,” NobodyGHY affirms.

As a single parent Dice recalls working a job even though she was charting on Billboard.  “You really have to know that God has called you to something.  Then you’re never distracted.  You can go through tough times, hard times, or embarrassing times, and you’ll still never get off course.”  You have to push thru Dice says, “you have to be dedicated and persistent.”

Developing a strong work ethic is so important Focus explains.  “That’s a lost skill.”  By practicing self-discipline, we can learn a work ethic that can produce the results we’re looking for.   We cannot let fear control us.  It’s okay to be afraid sometimes, but don’t let it stop you.

Embracing failure is also a part of the process and is something we have to do as we pursue our purpose.  Nothing beats a failure but a try.   Likewise, we can’t win if we don’t play.    These sound cliché, but they are nevertheless true.  If we look closely at failure, we’ll see the lessons that can help refine us.

Learn your strengths and weakness.  More importantly, understand how our weaknesses impact us so that we don’t allow them to hinder our growth and our progress.  And have faith that God will do what he said he would do!  Things will not always go as planned.  We will take losses.  If we put God first, we know he will guide us and provide for us.  You can catch Da Fixx, weekday mornings at 6 am est. on Holy Culture Radio, Sirius XM, Channel 154.  Want to join the conversation?  Follow Da Fixx on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.  We’d love to hear from you!
