College Campus Embrace The CHH Experience with Hulvey and nobigdyl.

Christian Hip Hop (CHH) is bridging the gap between faith and culture, bringing the message of Christ to younger generations in a way that speaks their language. Once confined to church worship settings and contemporary gospel, Christian music has now found a fresh expression in rap, making it more accessible and engaging for young audiences.

Calvin University’s Student Activity Office (SAO) recently demonstrated this cultural shift by hosting Hulvey’s All For You tour, featuring nobigdyl. as the opener. The event was not just another concert—it was a spiritual and communal experience that showcased how Christian rap is transforming the way young people interact with their faith.

A Concert That Became an Experience

As reported by Natasha Jayaputra of Chimes, the moment nobigdyl. took the stage, it was clear that this was more than just a music show. The audience was deeply engaged, moving closer to the stage, raising their arms, and rapping along to lyrics that resonated with them. Songs like “King Jesus” brought high energy, while “Empty Without You” offered a more mellow R&B-infused moment, demonstrating the diversity within CHH.

“This concert proved that music is more than just something to be heard — it’s an experience that invites full participation.”

The energy in the room, amplified by lights, haze machines, and booming sound, created a shared atmosphere where faith and music intertwined seamlessly.

The Balance Between Energy and Reflection

While hip-hop is known for its fast-paced delivery, both nobigdyl. and Hulvey know the importance of moments of stillness. They strategically built pauses into their set, turning off the lights and stepping off stage between songs.

“Despite the energy, Hulvey and Nobigdyl gave the audience moments of stillness, allowing them to catch their breath before moving on to the next song.”

This intentional pacing made the concert more than just entertainment—it became a space for spiritual connection and contemplation.

Worship Through Hip Hop

One of the most powerful moments of the night came when Hulvey led a 15-minute worship session, transitioning from rap to a heartfelt rendition of “Holy Spirit You Are Welcome Here” by Elevation Worship. This shift in tone created a deeper connection with the audience, proving that Christian rap isn’t just about energetic beats but also about worship and reverence.

Jack Droppers, the SAO Director, emphasized the importance of participation, stating, “Not every show has that level of lights or sound, but every show is aiming to ask, ‘How do we get people to participate?’”

This question highlights how Christian hip-hop is not just about performance but about drawing people into a communal worship experience.

The Authenticity of Christian Hip Hop

Christian rap has often been met with skepticism—some question whether hip-hop, a genre historically associated with secular themes, can truly align with Christian values. But as Droppers points out, true artistry often exists in the gray area.

“One of the reasons why I’m drawn to people and artists who can settle in the murkiness of creating something artistically interesting, versus just a clear message, is because often in that gray area, we find something that is more interesting or truthful than simply trying to get a point across.”

This perspective is key to understanding CHH’s success. It’s not about watering down the gospel or conforming to mainstream trends—it’s about using creative expression to reach hearts in a way that traditional methods might not.

Connecting Faith with Culture

For many young people, Christian hip-hop is more than just a genre—it’s a movement that allows them to experience their faith in a way that aligns with their culture. Hulvey’s concert demonstrated that when faith meets creativity, it can become a powerful tool for evangelism.

This event at Calvin University is just one example of how CHH is gaining momentum. As more young listeners embrace it, Christian hip-hop will continue to grow as a vital space where music and ministry meet.

Whether through energetic performances, moments of worship, or deep lyrical messages, Christian hip-hop is proving that faith can be vibrant, relevant, and deeply moving for the next generation. It’s more than just music—it’s a way for young believers to connect with God in a language they understand.
