Day 13 | Who You Are as a Private Person

Scripture: Matthew 6:6 (NLT) | Luke 12:2–3 (NLT)

Most of our faith is hidden from others, but our true spiritual depth is really just who we are when we’re by ourselves. It is easy to curate a public appearance of discipline and knowledge, but the private reality of our lives serves as the ultimate litmus test for our character. Ultimately, the way we live when no one is watching is the most accurate reflection of who we truly are before God.

Jesus repeatedly directed His disciples towards the hidden life. In Matthew 6, He spoke about prayer, giving, and fasting, and He warned against practising these things primarily for the attention of other people. He directed them towards the Father who sees what happens in secret.

That changes the purpose of spiritual discipline.

Prayer becomes a place where you actually speak to God rather than demonstrate that you pray. Similarly, Scripture becomes a standard for examining your character rather than material you collect for conversation. Fasting, too, becomes an exercise in surrender rather than just an exercise for admiration. The question is simple: what happens when there is nobody around to applaud you?

This question reaches beyond spiritual practices: Who are you with your phone at midnight? Who are you when nobody will know whether you kept your word? What do you do with temptation when there is no immediate consequence? How do you speak about someone when they are not there to hear you?

God is interested in those decisions. He sees the conversation you chose to end, the website you closed, the apology you made, the money you returned, the thought you refused to entertain, and the prayer you prayed when you did not feel like praying. 

This is why The Reset cannot end with a collection of habits that look impressive from the outside. The goal is a life that becomes increasingly honest before God. We are training ourselves to choose what is right because we love Him and want our lives to belong to Him.

Jesus said the Father sees what is done in secret. That should give us both comfort and conviction. God sees the private struggle that nobody else knows about, and He also sees the private obedience that nobody else celebrates.

You do not have to perform for Him.

Bring Him the real version of you. Bring Him the temptation, the weakness, the resentment, the insecurity, the habit you keep hiding, and the obedience you are quietly trying to practise. Let Him work there.

The hidden life matters because that is where integrity grows.

Practical Application

Choose one area of your private life that needs greater honesty before God. Spend fifteen minutes with Him today without your phone, and write down one specific decision you need to make differently from this point forward.

Then make that decision before the day ends.

1. Who am I becoming through the decisions I repeatedly make when nobody is watching?
2. What part of my private life would I be uncomfortable bringing fully into God’s presence?
3. What private decision can I make today that will strengthen my integrity?

Prayer

Father, search the parts of my life that other people cannot see and give me the courage to bring them honestly before You. Shape my private decisions until my hidden life reflects the person I am becoming in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
