Day 16| Let Yourself Be Known: The Courage to Be Honest With People
Published on September 22, 2026

Scripture: James 5:16 (NLT) | Galatians 6:2 (NLT)
Community becomes meaningful when people are willing to be honest.
You can sit in a room full of believers every Sunday and still live completely unknown. You can answer “I’m good” every time somebody asks and become very skilled at hiding what is actually happening inside you.
God did not create the Church to be a collection of people protecting their appearances. James tells us to confess our sins to one another and pray for one another because bringing what is hidden into the light creates room for healing.
That requires trust.
You need people who can hear the truth about your life without using it against you. These are also people who can pray for you without turning your struggle into gossip. You need people who will tell you when you are drifting while still reminding you that you are loved.
Galatians 6:2 tells us to “share each other’s burdens.” A burden cannot be shared when nobody knows it exists.
Some of us have become so accustomed to carrying everything privately that honesty feels like weakness. We have learned how to explain our struggles without revealing them or even acknowledging them. We give people enough information to sound vulnerable while keeping the part that hurts safely hidden.
But being a part of a community of believers also requires understanding the concept of interpersonal dependence.
That does not mean telling everyone everything, because it is important to discern. Choose people who have demonstrated character, discretion, and care. Then give them enough truth to walk with you honestly.
Jesus allowed His disciples to see His sorrow in Gethsemane. Similarly, Paul repeatedly spoke about his struggles, weaknesses, needs, and fears. Scripture gives us a picture of people who lived their faith in relationship with others.
Let somebody in.
Practical Application
Choose one trusted person and have a conversation about some private struggles. Tell them what you need from them: prayer, accountability, practical help, or simply a listening ear.
Then ask them about their burdens. Give them the same space you are asking them to give you.
Reflection Questions
- What am I keeping hidden because I am afraid of how people will respond?
- Who has earned the right to know the truth about what I am carrying?
- What would change if I allowed someone to help me with one burden this week?
Prayer
Father, give me wisdom to choose people I can trust and courage to let myself be known by them. Help me release the shame that keeps me hidden and teach me to carry the burdens of others with the same grace I need from them. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
