Day 17 |Choosing Relationships That Strengthen Your Walk
Published on September 23, 2026

Scripture: Proverbs 27:17 (NLT) | 1 Corinthians 15:33 (NLT)
The people around you influence you the most,
You may not notice it happening, but repeated conversations, habits, attitudes, and expectations leave an imprint. Proverbs says, “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.” That means relationships can make us sharper, wiser, and stronger in our walk with God.
It also means we need to pay attention to what our relationships are producing in us.
A friend who loves God can encourage you to pray when you feel like giving up, while one who values integrity makes compromise harder to justify, and a friend who knows your weaknesses can recognize when you are drifting even before you do.
The opposite can happen too; constant exposure to unhealthy attitudes can make them feel normal. When everyone around you treats gossip as entertainment, dishonesty as strategy, or sexual temptation as harmless, resisting those things becomes harder because the environment reinforces them.
This is why Paul warned the Corinthians that “bad company corrupts good character,” understanding that because influence works slowly, we often notice the result long after the pattern has become established.
This does not mean abandoning everyone who is struggling, because Jesus moved towards people who were far from God. Christian community should make room for people who need grace, truth, and growth.
It does mean knowing who has access to your inner life.
Your closest relationships should help you become more faithful to Christ. They should give you room to grow while still having the courage to challenge you. You need people who can celebrate your progress without being afraid to tell you when you are wrong.
Practical Application
Think about the five people you spend the most time communicating with. Write down one quality each relationship is strengthening in you.
Then identify one relationship that consistently pulls you away from the person God is forming you to become. Decide what boundary or change is needed.
Reflection Questions
- What qualities are my closest relationships strengthening in me?
- Who challenges me to become more faithful to Christ?
- Where have I allowed a relationship to normalise something God is asking me to change?
Prayer
Father, thank You for the people who sharpen my faith and help me grow. Give me wisdom in the relationships I build, courage to establish healthy boundaries, and grace to become a source of strength and truth for the people around me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
