Day 18 | Carry One Another: What Love Looks Like When Someone Is Struggling
Published on September 24, 2026

Scripture: Galatians 6:2 (NLT) | Romans 12:15 (NLT)
We see what love really looks like when someone is going through a hard time.
Galatians tells us to “share each other’s burdens,” and Romans tells us to “be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep.” Both commands require us to pay attention to what other people are struggling with.
Sometimes we make community harder than it needs to be because we assume that helping others means rushing in to fix their situations with immediate advice, scripted verses, or premature solutions when what they truly need is simply our presence, a willingness to sit beside them, and the patience to understand what actually happened before speaking.
Job’s friends provide a clear warning here. When they first arrived, they sat with him in silence for seven days, recognizing the depth of his suffering; their mistake was attempting to explain and analyze his pain rather than simply staying present with him.
There is wisdom in knowing when to speak and when to stay.
Sharing in somebody’s burden can mean praying with them, bringing them food, checking in after conversations, helping with something practical, or simply refusing to disappear when their situation is uncomfortable.
This means respecting their dignity so that a person facing a difficult season remains an individual deserving of patience, privacy, and genuine care rather than an assignment to be fixed.
Somebody around you may be carrying a heavy burden today. You may never know the full story, but you can still choose to be kind, attentive, and available.
Sometimes love looks like showing up again tomorrow.
Practical Application
Think of one person who is going through a difficult season. Contact them today and ask one specific question about what they are facing.
Then offer one practical form of help you can genuinely provide. Follow through.
Reflection Questions
- Do I tend to listen when people are hurting, or do I immediately reach for advice?
- Who around me might need practical support right now?
- What would it look like for me to stay present with someone through a difficult season?
Prayer
Father, make me attentive to the people around me and teach me how to carry their burdens with patience and love. Give me wisdom to know when to speak, when to listen, and when to simply stay. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
