Day 2 | Reclaiming the Attention Economy
Published on August 4, 2026

There’s a constant battle for our attention – notifications beckon us, social media platforms compete for our time, and algorithms learn what keeps us engaged. Often, we don’t think twice about it; we wake up and immediately reach for our phones, scrolling for twenty minutes. We also find ourselves comparing our ordinary lives to curated highlights, getting caught up in arguments or tragedies that we can’t control.
The core issue lies in the way technology can dominate our lives, taking control over our choices and actions. It becomes problematic when we find ourselves serving technology instead of it serving us.
Psalm 101:3 states, “I will set no worthless thing before my eyes.” What we continually place before our eyes eventually finds its way into our hearts, shaping our affections and influencing our decisions.
Similarly, Paul writes in Romans 12:2, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.” Transformation requires interruption. We have to stop allowing algorithms to decide what enters our minds all day.
This does not mean deleting every app or disappearing from the internet, but it does mean refusing to live on spiritual autopilot. It means asking if what we consume makes us peaceful or anxious, draws us closer to Christ, or dulls our desire for Him.
A tool must remain a tool. When it controls our mood or consumes our time, it occupies a place meant for God. We cannot fill every quiet moment with noise and still expect to hear His voice clearly. Sometimes the most spiritual action is putting the phone down, sitting in silence, and giving God full attention.
Practical Application
Choose one specific period today to be completely screen-free. Use that time to read Scripture, pray, take a walk, or have an uninterrupted conversation. Before returning to your screen, notice what shifted in your mind during the silence.
Reflection Questions
1. What digital habit currently holds the greatest influence over my mood or peace?
2. What can I limit or remove this week to create clear space for God?
Prayer
Father, forgive us for giving our attention to things that leave us distracted and spiritually numb. Help us become intentional about what we place before our eyes. Renew our thoughts through Your word and teach us to use technology without being controlled by it. Quiet the noise around us so we can recognise Your voice and give You our full attention. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
