Day 3 | Closing The Gap: When Good Intentions Aren’t Enough

Published on September 9, 2026

Scripture: James 1:22–25 (KJV), 1 John 3:18 (KJV)

There are many things I want to do. I want to read my Bible more, pray more, spend less time wasting away on my phone, become a better friend, tell people about Jesus, and stop doing the things I already know I should not be doing.

The problem is that wanting something is not the same as doing something. I can have sincere intentions and remain exactly where I am.

James 1:22 says, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” That verse is uncomfortable because James reminds us that we can deceive ourselves spiritually. I can listen to a sermon, attend youth group, highlight verses, save Christian videos, put a Bible verse in my bio, and know all the right answers while convincing myself that knowing what God says is the same as obeying Him. It is not.

There is a gap between intention and action, and I think that is where many of us get stuck. We tell ourselves that we will pray tomorrow, start reading our Bibles on Monday, apologize later, invite someone next week, stop when we are ready, or eventually talk to someone about what we are struggling with. But eventually can become a very long time.

James compares hearing God’s Word without obeying it to looking into a mirror and then walking away and forgetting what you look like. Imagine checking the mirror before school, seeing that something is completely wrong with your hair, saying, “Good to know,” and then walking out the door. That would make no sense. The mirror showed you something so that you could respond to it.

God’s Word does the same thing. It shows me where I am doing well, where I am wrong, what needs to change, and who Jesus is calling me to become. Eventually, however, I have to do something with what God has shown me.

That is where intentionality begins. Intentionality does not mean doing dozens of spiritual things perfectly every day. It means taking the next faithful step. It may mean reading one chapter, praying for five minutes, sending an apology, deleting an app, telling the truth, inviting a friend, asking for help, serving someone, or putting my phone down and actually sitting with God.

Small obedience is still obedience, and those small decisions begin building a completely different life.

First John 3:18 says, “Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” I appreciate that because following Jesus is not supposed to exist only in my thoughts. Love moves. Faith moves. Obedience moves.

At OneFold, we can talk all night about following Jesus. We can worship, study Scripture, and have incredible conversations. Eventually, however, Friday night has to become Saturday morning, then Monday at school, the group chat, practice, home, and the moments nobody else sees. That is where what we believe becomes real.

I am learning not to ask only, “Do I believe this?” I am also trying to ask, “What am I going to do because I believe this?”

That is how we close the intentionality gap: not someday, not when life gets easier, and not when we suddenly feel more spiritual, but today.

Practical Application

Choose one thing God has already been placing on your heart and turn it into an action you can complete within the next twenty-four hours. If you need to apologize, send the text. If you need to read Scripture, choose the chapter and set a specific time. If you need accountability, tell someone today.Do not leave with another good intention; respond to what God has shown you by taking action.

Reflection Questions

  1. What is something I keep saying I want to change but haven’t actually taken action on?
  2. What is one act of obedience I can complete in the next 24 hours?
  3. What usually keeps me from turning good intentions into action?

Prayer

Jesus, I don’t want to only know the right things or say the right things. I want my life to actually follow You. Show me where I’ve been replacing obedience with good intentions, and give me the courage to take the next step, even when it is small. Amen.
