Day 4 | The Desires of the Heart

The human heart is the seat of our decisions, our wills, and our souls. God has blessed each of us with the responsibility of free will. However, since the fall, humanity has been wrought with sin. 

The most dangerous aspect of this is the capability of the human heart to lie to itself. We justify our actions, and we fall victim to incorrect interpretations of our own motives behind how we speak, act, or react. The deceitfulness of the heart has cost many their destinies and their closeness with Christ. 

Jeremiah 17:9-10 reminds us: “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? But I, the Lord, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve.”

Knowing that the Lord examines every motive can feel vindicating until we realize our own hearts face that same examination. The good news is that a renewal process exists to align the desires of our hearts with the desires of the Lord.

Many people treat Psalm 37:4 as a free pass to turn God into a genie. This approach is both unbiblical and unwise. The first step to aligning our hearts with God’s is clear: take delight in the Lord. This means forsaking self-delight, turning away from our sin nature, and accepting the will and plan of God over our lives. This process allows God to give us our heart’s desires because He gives us what to desire in the first place. Only then can we ask Him for things already in alignment with His plan.

Leaning on our own understanding digs us deeper into fleshly outcomes. Philippians 2:13 shows that we are given the power to move toward what pleases the Lord as He works in us: “For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases Him.”

Romans 12:2 reinforces this by reminding us to let God transform us. Changing how we think changes what we desire. Surrendering daily and committing to abide in Him rather than our own understanding allows our minds to be renewed. When our minds are renewed, we learn God’s will and begin asking Him for the right things with the right motives.

Practical Application 

God wants what is best for us, but what we think we want often obstructs His plan. When you pray in your secret place for specific outcomes today, pause and ask yourself: “Have I given the Lord room to show me whether this is my own desire or His?”

1. In what areas am I currently relying on my own understanding rather than surrendering to God’s transformation?
2. Are my current prayers focused on asking God to approve my plans, or am I asking Him to shape my desires?

Prayer 

Father God, we come before You humbled by Your grace. Thank You for showing us that our hearts cannot be trusted, but Yours can. Please continue this daily process in us so we can surrender our will and pick up Yours. As You teach us to renew our minds, help us abide in You so our desires are birthed from Your work within us. Give us the faith and wisdom to trust Your ultimate plan. You are worthy, and we acknowledge You in all our ways. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
