Day 6 | Cracks Don’t Happen Overnight: Recognizing How Small Compromises Affect Your Faith

Ecclesiastes 10:1 says “Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savor; so doth a little folly in him that hath a reputation for wisdom and honor.” Meaning someone can have a reputation for good work, a testimony of truth, and be viewed with honor, but a single act or accumulating mistakes can jeopardize a life that was built on integrity.

What I have personally come to realize over the years is that character must be maintained continuously. I don’t say this to add pressure, but rather to raise your awareness to the importance of living a Godly life. As it says in Galatians 5:17 (AMP) “For the sinful nature has its desire which is opposed to the Spirit, and the [desire of the] Spirit opposes the sinful nature; for these [two, the sinful nature and the Spirit] are in direct opposition to each other [continually in conflict], so that you [as believers] do not [always] do whatever [good things] you want to do.”

As stated, the flesh is constantly at war with spirit, faith inspired will, strength and discipline, and as I alluded to earlier, five minutes of bad judgement can cause much damage and a plethora of undesired consequences. Why? Because thoughts become actions, actions become habits and habits become behavior. Furthermore, behavior is contagious, and decency aligned with accountability is what holds a community and people together. God’s word and real-world examples prove and demonstrate that the good or bad, a person produces starts internally and permeates outward. Nonetheless, no one is perfect and God does not expect us to be.

However, what he does expect is a repentant heart that is focused on him because repentance leads to change and safeguards righteous living. When you are tempted to sin ask yourself is this pleasing to God and try your hardest to resist the temptation to, by submitting your thoughts and actions to his word, the bible and/or enter prayer immediately. Or remove yourself from the proximity of the temptation(s). For example, if you are tempted to drink or smoke, leave or avoid environments where it is normalized/promoted, or limit the time you spend with people who do partake in that regularly. God offers grace but grace abused turns to judgement. Matthew 7:26-27  “And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it” Brothers and sisters, instead of building on a faulty foundation of compromise, let us live and build on solid foundation of the word of God and let us live with the type of integrity that demonstrates holy character. Amen

Practical Application:

Think about the compromises you’ve made in the past week or year and ask yourself how you feel about them. Now ask yourself is or were those compromises pleasing to God? This exercise will cause you reflect on your decisions and if revere God, you should feel conviction. If you do, God is faithful and just and will forgive. Repent and ask for forgiveness, read his word and take steps to resist the thought processes, proximities and environments that lead to that behavior.

Reflection Prompt

  1. How can I resist the temptation to compromise?
  2. Are my actions decided based on circumstances or God’s word?

Prayer: Our Father who art in heaven, we come before you with humility and confess that at times, we all have fallen short of your expectations and teaching, and we repent for these very actions. We ask you Lord to forgive us, strengthen and increase our faith as we seek to please you and do your will. Amen.
