IJLMI: Into Transition
On this episode of I’ll Just Let Myself In: Into Transition, host Lish Speaks opens her heart in a rare solo episode that feels less like a podcast and more like a spiritual diary. Known for her vibrant personality and interviews with culture-shaping guests, this time she steps away from the mic-to-guest dynamic to reflect on one of the most humbling seasons of her life—transition.
A Season of Change
From Atlanta back to the Northeast, Lish’s recent move wasn’t part of her plan. She was settled—thriving in ministry, enjoying family nearby, and walking in purpose. But when her husband’s job eliminated remote work, the couple faced a major life change. For Lish, it wasn’t just a change of address; it was a shift in identity, comfort, and calling. “You know how people say, ‘Tell God your plans if you want to make Him laugh?’ Baby, I would’ve never thought I was leaving Atlanta,” she shares.
As she reflects, Lish acknowledges how emotionally tugging transitions can be. Yet she also recognizes them as sacred invitations from God to grow. “If you reject transition, you’ll be stuck. No transition, no destiny,” she quotes from a sermon by Pastor Toure Roberts that once guided her through a similar crossroads nearly a decade ago.
The Challenge of Letting Go
The hardest part of any transition, Lish admits, isn’t the logistics, it’s the letting go. “If you’re going to embrace transition, you’ve got to let a dead thing be dead,” she says. Moving meant leaving behind her home church, where she made history as the first woman to preach a sermon. It meant saying goodbye to friends, routines, and the life she built. “It was hard,” she confesses, “but once Georgia was a dead thing—it was a dead thing.”
Still, Lish doesn’t minimize the grief that comes with obedience. She reminds listeners that grief and faith can coexist. Letting go, she explains, isn’t denial, it’s trust. “I had to accept that God said it was time to move forward. My obedience to God and my trust in His sovereignty were in the balance.”
Faith Over Fear
Throughout the episode, Scripture anchors her reflections. Isaiah 43:19 reminds her that God creates “rivers in the desert,” while Jeremiah 29:11 reassures her that His plans are still good, even when she doesn’t understand them. Romans 8:28—her favorite verse—becomes a mantra: “All things work together for good.”
She acknowledges that faith doesn’t remove fear, but it refocuses it. “Fear will blind you to the new opportunities in the new space,” she says. “You’ll be so focused on what you lost that you’ll miss what God is doing right in front of you.” Within one month of moving, Lish interviewed Charlamagne Tha God, Jonathan McReynolds, Angela Rye, and Dottie Peoples—a clear sign that God was already making new ways.
Trusting God Through the Unknown
What makes this episode so relatable is Lish’s honesty about control. “I didn’t need to understand to trust,” she says. “When you need to understand in order to worship or pray, you’re going to be in trouble.” She likens trusting God to surrendering the steering wheel—allowing Him to move the pieces even when the path seems unclear.
As a wife, she speaks vulnerably about submission and teamwork in marriage, describing how trust in God helped her support her husband through difficult decisions. “If I could trust a human who’s imperfect, how dare I not trust a God who’s never failed me?” she asks.
Learning to Lean
By the end of the episode, Lish circles back to Proverbs 3:5–6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” She reminds listeners that “leaning” implies dependence—something she’s learning to shift from self to Savior. “You don’t need to understand everything to be obedient,” she insists. “God doesn’t make mistakes.”
Transition, she concludes, isn’t punishment—it’s preparation. “God is consistent. I just have to be consistent,” she says. Whether you’re facing relocation, career change, or heartbreak, her message is clear: don’t fight the flow. Surrender and watch God make a way in the wilderness.
