Rob Potna: Encountering Yahweh and knowing you’re not worthy!
On this powerful episode of King Legend Talks, host King Legend welcomes Rob Potna—an artist, celebrity barber, and most importantly, a man radically transformed by the power of God. Rob’s story is one of chasing worldly success, hitting rock bottom, and ultimately encountering the living God in a way that left him forever changed.
Early Ambitions and the Fast Life
Born in Camden, New Jersey, and raised in Dallas, Texas, Rob Potna was immersed in music and hustle from a young age. By 14, he was pursuing a rap career, mingling with industry names, and dreaming of fame, money, cars, and women—the typical ambitions of someone caught up in the world’s allure.
But what felt like ambition quickly became a trap. “Back then it felt like a hustle. Today, I know it was just a hamster wheel,” Rob admitted. Like many chasing the dream, he ignored the warnings God gave him, brushing them off as luck. It wasn’t until years later that he could look back and recognize God’s hand sparing him time and time again.
Loss, Pain, and Darkness
Rob’s story took a devastating turn with a string of personal losses. He buried both grandmothers, an aunt, and then his older brother—all in close succession. The pain was overwhelming. When his brother was murdered at a dice game, Rob admitted, “I went numb. I didn’t want to process it, I just wanted money.”
This grief pushed him deeper into darkness. He became a well-known barber in Atlanta, launching viral social media trends and cutting the hair of celebrities. On the outside, he was thriving—earning more than ever, rubbing shoulders with stars, and living in luxury. But inside, he was broken. Substance abuse with ecstasy and tequila numbed the pain while his spirit cried out for something real.
A Radical Encounter With God
Rob’s breaking point came in Dallas after moving back from Atlanta. One night, while experimenting with magic mushrooms to calm his anxiety, he had an out-of-body experience that changed everything. He described seeing his life flash before his eyes and then being transported into the kingdom of God.
“I saw the gold-paved streets, the jewels, the crystals on the buildings. I broke down in tears because I knew it was real,” he recalled. “For the first time in my life, I felt the presence of God.”
Overcome by the holiness of the moment, he cried out, “Thank you, Yahweh,” as God reassured him that his life still had purpose. That encounter set Rob on a radical journey of obedience. Within 24 hours, he cut off his long hair—once a symbol of vanity—and began a 21-day water fast. His lifestyle of chasing fame ended instantly, replaced by prayer, solitude, and Scripture.
Music with a New Mission
After nearly three years of silence, God gave Rob the green light to return to music—this time to glorify Him. His first Christian rap single, Holy, quickly became one of his fastest streaming songs without any paid promotion. “The Holy Spirit told me it’s not about whether you should do it, but whether you’re ready,” Rob said.
Now, his testimony is infused into every lyric. He calls it “testimony music”—songs that tell his story while pointing people to God’s grace. He’s collaborating with Christian hip hop artists, gaining traction in the scene, and staying committed to obedience. As he puts it, “I’m not selling an ounce of my soul for streams. If it’s for me, God will open the doors.”
Planting Seeds and Making Disciples
More than music, Rob’s mission is about discipleship. He knows firsthand how easy it is for the enemy to blind people with temporary success. “Satan can give you six figures quick if you turn your back on God. But it will never satisfy your soul,” he said.
Instead of chasing validation, he’s focused on planting seeds—sharing kindness, offering encouragement, and always attaching Jesus’ name to his testimony. “We’re called to plant millions of seeds,” Rob reminded listeners. “Not all of them will grow in our time, but God will bring the increase.”
Conclusion
Rob Potna’s journey from worldly success to radical transformation is a living reminder that no one is too far gone for God’s grace. His encounter with the presence of God shifted everything, and now his mission is to point others to the same truth: only Jesus can satisfy the soul.
For those struggling with loss, chasing fame, or battling emptiness, Rob’s testimony offers hope. The world promises riches, but only Christ promises life.
