There’s Nothing Wrong With You For Being Single

The church talks about marriage a lot. Sermons, couples’ retreats, relationship workshops — the message, intentional or not, is hard to miss: get married, and get married soon. But what happens to the person sitting in the pew who isn’t married and has no immediate prospects? Too often, they’re met with side glances and whispered questions. Oh, he’s still single? What’s wrong with him? Why hasn’t she found someone yet?

Spoken word artist Emory Marshall Jr. sat down with King Cyz on WhatItIzWhatItBeezLike?! and said something the church doesn’t say nearly enough — we’ve made marriage an idol.

And he’s right.

When marriage becomes the measuring stick for spiritual maturity or personal value, singleness gets treated like a problem to solve rather than a season to steward. The truth is, some people are called to singleness. Not as a consolation prize, but as a genuine calling with its own purpose, freedom, and kingdom impact. Even for those who do desire marriage one day, rushing to the altar out of social pressure has never produced the outcomes we’re hoping for.

Emory made another point worth sitting with — there are people doing some of the greatest work of their lives because they’re single. The focus, the availability, the bandwidth to pour into purpose without the weight of family responsibility is itself a gift. That doesn’t diminish marriage. It honors singleness.
