Davina: Blood on the Door, Challenges in CHH, and Genuine Connection
In this episode of WhatItIzWhatItBeezLike?! on Holy Culture Radio (SiriusXM Channel 140), host King Cyz sits down with gospel artist Davina—a powerhouse singer, rapper, and storyteller—whose latest album, Blood on the Door, embodies both her personal testimony and her creative evolution. Their conversation weaves through faith, music, struggle, and purpose, revealing how Davina’s journey from gospel choirs to Christian hip hop was more than a genre shift—it was a calling.
From the Choir Stand to Christian Hip Hop
Davina’s musical journey began at just three years old, singing with her sisters as The Boyd Sisters. Raised in church but shaped by the realities of the hood, she learned early that worship and hardship often coexist. Her introduction to Christian hip hop (CHH) was marked by skepticism—“I didn’t like Christian rappers,” she admits—but that changed when she met her husband, Jered Allstar, whose lyrical skill and spiritual authenticity opened her eyes to the beauty and power of CHH done well. “It gave me a new perspective and a new love for it,” she told King Cyz, laughing at how God uses irony to heal old biases.
Blood on the Door: A Testament of Protection
The title Blood on the Door draws directly from Davina’s lived experience. Inspired by the biblical story of the Israelites marking their doorposts with lamb’s blood for protection, the album represents God’s covering over her and her family. She recalls how her grandmother would anoint every doorway of their homes with oil—a vivid picture that stayed with her. “Everywhere we lived, God covered us,” she said, describing the record as both musical and spiritual testimony. Each track mirrors a different season of her life, underscored by one unchanging truth: God never left.
Merging Sounds and Seasons
Davina’s sound is as diverse as her story—blending gospel, Christian hip hop, rhythm and praise, and even indie influences. “I can’t just stick to one thing,” she said. “That ain’t me. I’m Davina.” Songs like Dirty Secrets and Raised in the Wild explore raw, honest narratives, while Jesus Walk With Me and Sparrow Song lean into praise and renewal. The interludes—“Come to Jesus” and “In the Name of Jesus”—serve as spiritual markers, reflecting her grandmother’s old-school altar calls. “We don’t have altar calls anymore,” Davina lamented. “Church shouldn’t be entertainment; it should be transformation.”
Hope You Got a Bible: When Music Sparks Movement
One of the standout moments in Davina’s career has been the #GotMyBible drive, born from her hit single Hope You Got a Bible featuring Dice Gamble. What began as a catchy hook turned into a ministry initiative to give away Bibles to those who can’t afford them. “It’s crazy—it can cost $40 to get a Bible,” she said. “We just wanted to make sure everyone who wants one can get one.” Through her website and social media, Davina and her team continue to distribute physical Bibles, blending art with tangible outreach.
Faith, Family, and Feminine Strength
Davina’s transparency about faith and marriage is one of the episode’s highlights. Working alongside her husband, producer and CHH artist Jered Allstar, she described the balance of creativity and love as “many hats—but all grace.” Their dynamic challenges stereotypes about gender roles in ministry, proving that partnership in purpose is powerful. When asked how she navigates industry recognition—award nominations and features on platforms like Rapzilla and Holy Culture—she humbly responded, “Every time I’m mentioned, I’m grateful. I just want to get God’s word out there.”
For the Waiting Woman and the Wounded Church
Perhaps most moving was Davina’s encouragement to women waiting for God’s timing in relationships. “While I was waiting, God was working on me,” she said, explaining how her patience prepared her for Jered. She also addressed the church directly, calling for grace over judgment. “Everybody gets grace, not just you,” she reminded listeners. “We don’t know what people are going through, even in church.”
A Voice Marked by Purpose
By the end of the conversation, it’s clear that Davina isn’t just another artist—she’s a messenger. Her voice, both literally and spiritually, carries weight. When she says “I’m Davina, hello,” it’s not just an introduction—it’s a declaration of identity, resilience, and redemption.
As King Cyz closed the show, he summed up the sentiment perfectly: “This album is setting you up for what’s next.” And judging by the heart, humility, and heat Davina brings to every verse, what’s next will be nothing short of powerful.
