Eric Stephens: From Grief to Grace

In this powerful episode of King Legend Talks, host KingLegend757 sits down with Eric Stephens, founder of Redwood Christian Ministries and host of The Rooted in Christ Podcast. What unfolds is a raw and heartfelt conversation about redemption, discipleship, burnout, and what it truly means to live out the gospel beyond church walls.

A Wake-Up Call to Faith

Eric’s journey into ministry began with heartbreak and awakening. After losing his grandmother—whom he deeply admired—he realized she held a part of his heart that only Jesus was meant to have. Her passing became the catalyst that drew him back to God.

At the time, Eric admits, he was far from living for Christ. He was caught up in the world—substance abuse, partying, and chasing validation. But one desperate prayer—“God, if You’re real, I need a sign”—changed everything. Moments later, a train blared its horn three times. Three days later, his grandmother passed away. That became the undeniable confirmation that God was calling him home.

When his local pastor reached out after noticing his absence from church, it was another reminder that he was seen and known. From there, Eric began walking out his faith with a new sense of purpose.

Saved to Be Sent

Eric emphasizes one of the strongest truths of his ministry: “We were saved to be sent, not saved to be safe.”

He explains that faith isn’t passive—it’s active. Jesus, Paul, and Peter all got their hands dirty. For Eric, serving meant putting faith into motion—leading community outreach, mentoring young men, and connecting with people right where they were. “You can’t just sit in the pews and expect growth,” he says. “Faith without works is dead. We’re called to labor in love.”

His early ministry began when his pastor appointed him Director of Community Outreach—a position he initially felt unqualified for. But God had already been preparing him through everyday encounters at the gym and in his community. By simply sharing his testimony, Eric unknowingly drew dozens of people to Christ. “I didn’t preach at them,” he says. “I just told them what God did for me.”

Leadership, Burnout, and Boundaries

Eric’s honesty about leadership fatigue is refreshing. “You’ve got to learn to let your no validate your yes,” he says, reflecting on lessons learned through years of ministry work.

As Director of Outreach and a pastor at his church, Eric balances heavy responsibilities—from overseeing security to leading events like Presence with a Purpose, which provides Christmas gifts and prayer to over 1,000 children annually.

But that kind of impact requires rhythm and rest. Eric now guards his Sabbath fiercely and prioritizes training new leaders. “Delegation isn’t a spiritual gift—it’s a necessity,” he laughs. “If everything falls apart when I’m not there, I didn’t lead well.”

Lessons in Compassion and Discernment

When King Legend asks how Eric handles hard conversations, his response reveals deep pastoral maturity. “It’s okay to say, ‘I don’t know,’” he says. “Sometimes people don’t need a hundred Scriptures—they just need you to sit with them and listen.”

From dealing with grief and suicide to navigating hardened hearts, Eric stresses the importance of Holy Spirit-led discernment. “Some people have conviction—they’re close to surrender. Others have hardened hearts. You have to know which one you’re dealing with.”

Beyond the Walls: Hip Hop, Faith, and Revival

As the founder of Beyond the Walls, a faith-driven hip hop concert series in Cleveland, Eric bridges music and ministry with purpose. After returning $30,000 in donations when a top funder pulled out, Eric trusted God to provide. “He told me to write the vision down and make it plain,” he recalls. “By the end, every dollar was covered.”

At Beyond the Walls 2, over 40 attendees gave or rededicated their lives to Christ. “That’s why we do it,” Eric says. “We don’t just want concerts—we want transformation.”

Faith Over Fame

In a closing moment of unity, Eric leads listeners in prayer for two artists—Jadakiss and Miles Minnick. His reasoning is simple: every platform has purpose. “What would it look like if someone like Jadakiss gave his life to Christ? God could use that testimony to reach thousands.”

He also lifts up Miles Minnick for his consistency and courage in navigating criticism as a leader in Christian Hip Hop. “It’s easy to have faith until your faith is tested,” Eric says. “Miles keeps showing up, and I pray strength and peace over him.”

Final Thoughts

Eric Stephens’ story is proof that God can use anyone who’s willing to get their hands dirty for the Kingdom. His message to believers is clear: stop sitting on the sidelines. “We weren’t saved to hide,” he reminds us. “We were saved to go.”
