Online Communities
There are hundreds if not thousands of online communities. Either on social media, through website, newsletters and focus groups. If you have a preferred platform where you hang out chances are there is a community there already waiting for you.
In the years since COVID however, people are looking for ways to build community outside cyberspace so that’s where we will be focusing on today. While the internet has given us a room to grow, the truth of the matter is that nothing compares to an actual face-to-face interaction with another believer.
How to build a community as an artist?
1. Pour into your community.
If you have not visited our Inside View with Doc Watson and Trigg do so right now. Pouring into your local community is where you need to start as a Christian artist, and not just to land gigs or shows. See how you can use your gifts to give back to others. Teach a class in your local community, or create a workshop to help local artists hone their craft. This will put you face-to-face with people with the same interests as you, that can open the door for genuine friendships, not to mention an opportunity to share the gospel through music.
2. Visit Studios.
Christine Garvey from A Mighty Practice, shared that she lived in nine different cities in 15 years. By visiting other people’s studios, and taking interest in their work is how she was able to build a large network of friends. Are there studios that you can visit within your city? Or would you be willing to open up your studio for other people to visit? Having these types of exchanges can be beneficial in so many ways, not only can you be opening the door for collaboration, learning and mentorship. are a seasoned artist, this could mean pouring into another artist through mentorship.

3. Support other artists.
Many artists we have mentioned this as their tipping point towards creating a great community. Show up to events early and stay late, getting to know the artist there, and showing support by introducing yourself and getting to know them as well. All artists start somewhere, and they can be disheartening to play to an empty room. Be the name behind the face, and get to know those starting out or those that have been around for a while! New connections breeds creativity, there’s nothing better than meeting someone who can inspire you.
4. Show up.
Being an artist is not an easy thing, you get paid pennies on the dollar and oftentimes those pennies are in short supply. As someone who is trying to build a community, know when to show up and not expect payment: it could be a fundraiser, church event, wedding, birthday etc. And under those circumstances, show up as the light of the world that you are supposed to be. With professionalism, kindness, and above all with humility. Building a community means that you use your gifts as that, an offering to build up others in the name of Jesus.
Run The Race
Being a Christian was never meant to be a solitary endeavor. We were created in community since the beginning, and we rely on it to keep us accountable, and inspired.
