Can Christians lose their salvation?

That is a question that has rolled around in the minds of believers at one point or another for a millennium.

If you have found this article, you are curious too.
Perhaps you have strayed away from the faith and wonder if God still sees you? If He would still welcome you back if you were faced with Him today?

Maybe you think there is no coming back from what you have done, and there is no redemption for you, and you are desperately seeking answers to the question that keeps you up at night.
Or it’s not you who you fear for, but someone you know and love who has fallen away.

Well, brother and sister, wonder no more. There is hope to be had because repentance is a work of the Lord (Romans, 2:4), and if that is in your heart, you are at the right place for God to do His redemptive work.

What is a Christian?

To answer the question of whether a Christian can lose their salvation, we must first define what salvation is.
1. A Christian is someone who has made a profession of faith. Romans 10:9 says, “If you confess with your mouth, the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” A Christian is someone who believes this statement to the core.
2. A Christian is someone who is marked by the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 1:13 states that upon believing in Christ, we were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. The proof of this lies in that we exhibit the gifts of the Spirit as mentioned in Galatians 5:22-23, “love, joy, peace, patience, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”
3. A Christian is someone who is a new creature. Second Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; all things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” We no longer live a life of sin (1 John 3:9), but as a new creation because the Lord’s Spirit now resides in us (1 Corinthians 6:19).

Romans 11:19 says, “for the gifts, and the calling of God are irrevocable,” meaning that once you are given the gift of salvation (Ephesians 2:8 9), it is not something that the Lord takes back. And because we know that the Lord does not lie (Titus 1:2), we can rest assured that salvation is ours.

Can a Christian lose their salvation?

If someone considers themselves a Christian because they have done and displayed the signs of someone who is saved, as previously stated, they cannot lose their salvation. And here are four scriptures to back that up.

  • John 10:26-30 “But you do not believe, because you are not of my sheep, as I said to you. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of my hand.”
  • Romans 8:30 “Moreover, whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.”
  • Romans 8:38-39 states, “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height, nor death, nor any other creative thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus, our Lord.”
  • Philippines 1:6 “He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.”

Just because someone calls himself a Christian doesn’t make them one, and that’s where most of our confusion lies when we fear someone has lost their salvation. There has to be a real encounter with our Lord and Savior that causes transformation in every part of that person’s life. Jesus said in Matthew 7:16-18, “You will know them by their fruits… a good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.”
For those who choose Jesus, He promises that nothing will separate us from Him. So the question is not so much can a Christian lose their salvation, but rather, was that person a real Christian to begin with?

Cling to Hope

Can a Christian lose their salvation? According to the Bible, no.
Because we believe that the Bible is God-breathed, and good for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training (2 Timothy 3:16-17), we must also believe that the promises in them are true. And that God indeed cannot lie.

So if you had an encounter with Jesus, where you claimed Him as Lord of your life, and you were sealed by the Holy Spirit, you are a new creature!
Does it mean that you will lead a perfect life? No.

But it means that the repentance you feel is a work of God that you can cling to to get you back on the right path. God has not forgotten you, God has not forsaken you. He still loves you, and He is waiting for you with open arms.

If you are worried about your salvation today, repentance is yours. Turn your back on the person who grieves the Holy Spirit who lives within you, and embrace the new creation that you are in Christ.
