Day 6 | The Sitting Place of Mary

Published on July 11, 2026

Supporting Scriptures:

Luke 10:38-42 | Psalm 46:10

Activity can easily become a clever counterfeit for intimacy. In Luke 10, we find Martha completely consumed by the logistics of hospitality, pacing the room to ensure every detail of the evening is perfect. Meanwhile, her sister Mary sits quietly at the feet of Jesus, listening directly to His teaching. When Martha complains about the unequal distribution of labor, Jesus delivers a profound correction.

He notes that Martha is anxious and troubled about many minor details, but only one thing is actually necessary. Mary, He states, has chosen the better portion, which will not be taken away from her. Martha was working for Jesus, but her frantic activity completely blinded her to the reality of His immediate presence.

Many Christians operate exactly like Martha. We treat our faith like a grueling checklist of religious duties, community service, and constant organizing. We assume God is impressed by our busy schedules, yet our hearts remain anxious, dry, and easily irritated. In the same vein, we allow the production of ministry to replace the simple discipline of sitting at His feet.

We must keep in mind that true spiritual authority is in stillness, not frantic motion. The insights, character, and peace you need for your life cannot be manufactured through human effort. They are received only when you stop moving long enough to listen to the Teacher.

Open your Bible today without a notebook, a study guide, or a checklist. Sit for ten minutes reading a single passage slowly – preferably today’s two supporting scriptures – focusing entirely on enjoying God’s presence without trying to produce a lesson from it.

Reflection Questions

1. Does my daily walk with God feel more like a demanding checklist or a relationship based on presence?

2. What specific task do I need to step away from today to create an unhurried space for stillness?

Prayer

Father, deliver me from the trap of frantic religious performance. Forgive me for prioritizing my work for You over my time with You. Teach me how to sit quietly at Your feet, and anchor my identity in Your presence rather than my own productivity. Amen.
